The vintage look comes from freehand piping: shell borders worked around the whole edge, and the slight irregularity of hand piping is what gives these cakes their old-fashioned rhythm. Nothing is stamped or moulded, so no two hearts come out identical even in the same colour.
Colour carries these designs more than decoration does. Deep burgundy and black read dramatic and need the colour developed fully so it stays true under party lighting instead of drifting grey, while cream and white read soft and take satin bows and hand-piped lettering well. A message can be written on the day, which is useful when the cake is a surprise.
